The Nintendo Power collection is the latest entry in the Internet Archive's efforts to preserve gaming history. Ishinomori's Zelda tale was such a success, it was republished as a standalone work in 1993, and given a collector's edition release in 2015. This was no mere tie-in strip though – the adaptation was the only American work by legendary manga creator Shotaro Ishinomori, creator of iconic Japanese heroes Cyborg 009, Kamen Rider, and the Super Sentai franchise, which would later be adapted into Power Rangers for the west. ![]() One particular highlight of Nintendo Power's 24-year run was issue 32, which launched a 12-chapter comic adaptation of Super Nintendo game The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Nintendo Power wasn't officially released in the UK - Official Nintendo Magazine was the sponsored domestic publication for all things Mario here - but it was frequently found in newsagents that imported American magazines. The archive is also a repository for some of the stranger sights in gaming history, such as the odd peripherals advertised in issue 04 - an issue which also previews the original Metal Gear game. Skimming the issues will be a fine trip down memory lane for older players, while giving younger ones a look at the earlier days of games journalism. ![]()
